What is Dharma?

The word Dharma is often translated as truth, the natural way, or the teachings of life. At the Dharma Residency, we understand Dharma as whatever reality is revealing through nature, people, and direct experience. Our role is not to teach it, but to create the conditions in which it can be discovered.

Dharma Container

We cannot manufacture insight, wisdom, or meaningful experiences.

What we can do is carefully prepare the conditions in which they are more likely to emerge.

The journey begins the moment you arrive. We meet you at the airport and gradually leave behind the pace, noise, expectations, and constant stimulation of everyday life. As the roads become quieter and the landscape more expansive, attention naturally begins to shift.

Our role is not to interpret the island for you or tell you what you should experience. Instead, we quietly arrange the conditions—through thoughtful timing, local knowledge, carefully chosen locations, meaningful company, and a relaxed rhythm—so that HawaiÊ»i can reveal herself in her own way.

The island has been teaching these lessons long before any of us arrived.

We don't direct these stories.
We simply help you hear them.

What is Dharma Residency?

The Dharma Residency began with a dream.

A distant island at the edge of the world where people gathered in search of treasure.

Not treasure buried beneath the ground, but the kind discovered through powerful places, remarkable people, meaningful questions, and shared experiences.

That dream became The Dharma Residency.

This Project is a carefully prepared environment where we practice noticing, discovering what is already here.

With the guidance of the Island, we learn to quiet distraction, assumptions, and mental noise so that reality can reveal itself more clearly through nature, conversation, silence, and direct experience.

Hawaiʻi offers an extraordinary setting for this practice, but the goal is much larger than the island itself.

Once you learn to recognize the Dharma here, you begin to recognize it everywhere.

Why Hawaiʻi?

Many who visit Hawaiʻi describe an experience that is difficult to put into words. Some speak of peace. Others notice clarity, presence, or simply feeling more fully alive.

In Hawaiian culture, many associate this quality with mana—the living vitality present in people, places, and nature.

Perhaps it comes from the island's isolation in the middle of the Pacific. Perhaps from standing beside an active volcano where the Earth is still creating herself. Perhaps it is in the ancient forests, the vast ocean, or the slower rhythm of island life.

Like surfing, extraordinary experiences don't happen simply because the waves are there. That ecstacy on the wave requires a surfboard, preparation, timing, lots of practice, humility, local knowledge, and literally going with the flow.

The Dharma Residency is our way of preparing the board, explaining the circumstances and help with the timing.

We create the container, assemble the group, share local knowledge, and design meaningful expeditions so that Hawaiʻi itself can become part of a more meaningful journey.

How does it work?

Each residency brings together a host, a carefully selected goal and a small group of participants for several days of exploration.

Some come to write.

Some to film.

Some to research.

Some to reflect.

Some simply to experience Hawaiʻi with extraordinary people.

Every participant brings their own questions, projects, investigations, and perspective, contributing something unique to the shared experience.

As a natural result of these encounters, conversations, friendships, and discoveries, stories emerge. With everyone's permission, selected moments may be documented so others can follow the journey through films, journals, photography, podcasts, and creative work.

Four Ways to Participate

Sponsored Expeditions
Our Sponsored Expeditions are fully facilitated, all-inclusive invitations for carefully selected participants. Accommodation, transportation, meals, activities, and daily expeditions are provided, allowing everyone to focus entirely on discovery, conversation, and shared experience.

Independent Expeditions
Not every journey needs sponsorship.

Independent Expeditions allow individuals, families, creators, researchers, teachers, and small groups to use the Dharma Residency as their base camp while designing their own experience. We can provide accommodation, transportation, local knowledge, logistics, introductions, filming support, and facilitation as needed.

The Treasure

Every expedition begins with different people.

Every group asks different questions.

Every journey uncovers different treasures.

We don't promise answers.

We don't promise transformation.

We simply create the conditions where extraordinary people, an extraordinary island, and genuine curiosity come together to see what emerges.

The treasure is different for everyone.

That is exactly why we come.
